The Difference Between Transfer Stickers and Regular Stickers – What You Need to Know

January 1, 2026

If you’re ordering custom stickers to show off your image or brand, it’s important to understand the difference between transfer stickers and regular stickers. Each type is made differently, applied differently, and may be easier to install for certain applications.

What are transfer stickers

Transfer stickers can be a printed vinyl sticker or solid color vinyl that has very detailed designs with features cut out leaving floating elements – like lettering or a design where you do not want any background on the sticker – only the profile. The extra material is removed (weeding), and a layer of transfer tape holds the remaining vinyl design in place against the backing. Just prior to installing these stickers you pull the backing off and then apply the sticker and transfer tape to the surface you’re applying the stickers to. After the stickers are pressed on firmly you peel off the transfer tape and you’re left with a perfectly applied vinyl sticker!

What are regular stickers

Regular stickers (check out our Custom Stickers) have graphics printed on vinyl, laminated, and then cut to the outer profile/shape. The printed graphic can include full-color images, gradients, or illustrations. These stickers come with a peel-off backing and are applied as one printed piece.

Visual differences

Transfer stickers appear clean and minimal once applied. They have no background, which makes them ideal for glass, vehicles, or signage.

Regular stickers often include a visible border or background, especially if they’re not contour cut. They allow more freedom in design but don’t offer the same cut-out look.

How they’re applied

Transfer stickers are applied by pressing the entire piece onto a surface, then peeling off the transfer tape. This leaves the vinyl design in place.

Regular stickers are peeled from their backing and applied in one step. They’re faster to install but don’t work well for detailed or floating elements.

Which one to choose

Transfer stickers are best for cut logos or lettering on smooth surfaces. They’re commonly used on windows, cars, helmets, and equipment. They are also ideal for larger stickers that are harder to handle and stick on nice and straight!

Regular stickers are better suited for smaller promotional items, packaging, and branding and easy application uses or if your design doesn’t require any cutouts or floating elements.
